Standard Of Care

leave a comment »

You go to see your doctor.

He tells you have X and this is how we treat X.

Why that treatment?

Because it is “the standard of care”.

What?

“Standard of care” is the treatment doctors have agreed on to avoid liability.

Standard of care

—  may not be the best treatment

—  may not even be a good treatment

—  may not heal/cure you; could even make your health worse

—  prevents doctors from being liable

Avoiding liability is the basis for health care in the United States.

Patient can die, be crippled, suffer, whatever; as long as the medical profession is not liable.

“Standard of care”.

Without “standard of care”, medicine would

—  provide you will better treatments

—  innovate and improve faster

—  save patients billions of dollars

—  force doctors to do their job

Today, many doctors do not do their job; provide the best treatment to cure/heal you.

Instead of working hard and helping society, they just follow along in the ruts collecting money.

There are few exceptions.

Why?

Any doctor against “standard of care” will be ostracized by the medical profession.

No doctor is going to be allowed to make it possible for a patient to hold the medical profession liable.

There is a simple solution:

—  do not allow the medical profession to avoid liability(all disputes must go before a panel)

—  the panel may have medical personnel but doctors(including administrative personnel) does not get to decide liability(doctors never take away the license of another doctor no matter the evil he did)

The question to be answered:

Did the patient receive the best treatment possible?

“Standard of care” is NOT the best treatment possible.

The facts no one wants to read.

If the facts make you mad, it could be the truth hurts.
